Philadelphia’s push to celebrate and support businesses that are strengthening the local workforce has taken a solidified shape through the Employer of Choice Initiative, announced this September as part of National Workforce Month. The City’s Workforce Solutions team, in partnership with the Workforce Professional Alliance (WPA), is calling for businesses to step forward and be recognized for their contributions to equitable economic growth in the region.

The initiative seeks to spotlight those companies that have committed to not only filling immediate job openings but to also closing the skills gap and advancing career opportunities for all Philadelphians. According to the City of Philadelphia’s official announcement, being an Employer of Choice means getting involved in “employment recruitment, retention and promotion practices” that echo the city’s focus on equitable economic progress.

Businesses that earn this designation will receive various forms of recognition and support from the City of Philadelphia. This recognition includes a ceremonial acknowledgment, a digital badge for company branding, personal business services assistance, opportunities to network with peers, and chances to engage with workforce providers to further develop their workforce.

Applications for the program kicked off on September 8, with a straightforward process that allows local businesses to showcase their strategies for providing equitable career growth. To fast become recognized, businesses must submit a Self-Assessment and Business Profile Narrative, demonstrating their commitment to these values. The application process comes in stages, with initial deadlines on September 29 and a final deadline for additional materials set for October 27.

The WPA, with more than 30 workforce development organizations, is at the heart of this initiative. Boasting over $70 million invested in the workforce of Philadelphia, the alliance, including partners from The Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia and Philadelphia Works, aims to fortify a coordinated and innovative workforce ecosystem. The theme for Philadelphia’s workforce strategy this year is “The Power of Partnerships,” reflecting the communal effort to bolster the skills of the local workforce to meet employer needs.
